Our Club

Beaumaris Yacht Club (BYC) was established on the Ricketts Point foreshore in 1950. The club was started by a group of local sailors who were keen to begin their organised sailing in the local area. For the first few years the newly-formed Club used a tent as their clubhouse. The current BYC clubhouse was built in 1954 by the founding members and has been extensively renovated and modified over the years. The Club's facilities include a canteen, boat storage, large hall (available for hire), toilets, change room facilities and race control tower. BYC is a leading club for off-the-beach sailing on Port Philip Bay. Like all volunteer-based clubs, BYC relies on its members to contribute to the continuing development and operation of the Club. This member involvement promotes a friendly culture and the continuation of the Club. During the sailing season the Club runs comprehensive junior and senior sail training programs and many Club members participate in district, state and national events in various classes.

Social Activities

The Club runs a number of social activites outside the regular sailing events.  A highlight of the annual calendar is the BYC Junior Live-In. This is when those participating in the junior training stay at the Club on a Saturday night. The trainees participate in many sailing and group activities on the Saturday and Sunday. New ideas for events we could conduct are always warmly received.

Our Members

Members of the BYC come from a wide range of backgrounds and range in age from 3 years to 87 years young! Skill levels vary widely, from novices to highly skilled sailors. Members of BYC are bound in friendship by a common interest in sailing and enjoyment of this excellent sport. Most yacht clubs have a unique burgee (flag) that identifies the club and its member's boats. the BYC burgee is a representation of the light blue sky over the dark blue ocean separated by the yellow sands of the forehore. The BYC burgee is represented on the top right hand corner of this website.

BYC Competition Sailing

As with most sailing clubs, our activities are centred around racing - but in a friendly, supporting atmosphere. racing is the challenge to sail a set course in the shortest possible time. Differences between classes of boats and skill level of crew are balanced by a system of handicapping (Yardsticks), ensuring all competitors ahve an equal chance of success. The club holds races on most Sundays during the sailing season (October to April inclusive). the briefing session for the Sunday afternoon racing is held at 1pm with racing commencing at approximately 2pm. Trophies for the handicap series, division series, class series and overall Club Champion are presented at the AGM and presentation function which is held in mid-July.
